Department of Periodontology

Periodontology is the specialty that deals with prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the gingiva and other supporting tissues which involves scaling, root planing and other surgical procedures. With the approval of the Dental Council of India the undergraduate program was commenced in the year 2008.

Objectives

To mentor the students to diagnose and treat the diseases of the gingiva and supporting tissues of the teeth.
To carry out heightened researches in various fields of periodontology.
To be a center of expertise for periodontal regeneration.
To attain scientific progress through national and international publications and by conducting various academic activities.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes basics of Periodontology, etiopathogenesis of periodontal diseases, periodontal medicine, clinical diagnosis, treatment planning, non- surgical and surgical periodontal therapy, supportive periodontal treatment, recent advances in periodontal therapy and evidence-based practice. The syllabus is divided into must know, nice to know and desirable to know. Teaching includes interactive lectures in both theoretical and practical aspects. Chairside training includes demonstrations and hands-on training for basic periodontal procedures. Other activities of undergraduates include posters and seminar presentations. Internal assessment examinations are conducted periodically which include both theory and practicals.

Facilities

The clinic is equipped with state of art dental equipments such as ultramodern dental chairs, ultrasonic scalers, air-powder polishing systems, electrocautery unit, physio dispenser with implant systems, LASER unit and magnification tools for providing basic and advanced periodontal therapy. All the cases will be discussed and monitored by efficient faculty. Patient counseling is done with posters, models, educational videos and pamphlets in counseling room.

Achievements

National oral hygiene day was organized on August 1st, 2019 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Shankwalkar, who is the doyen of Indian Periodontics and founder President of Indian Society of Periodontology. A camp was conducted examining 266 patients and oral prophylaxis was performed for all the patients on that day.

Department has more than 150 National and International publications in indexed journals.

Research study on “effect of oil pulling with Sesame oil on plaque induced gingivitis: a microbiological study” approved by ICMR is being conducted.

Many students participated and presented scientific posters and papers in State and National Dental Conferences and Students Conventions winning prizes.

Toppers in Periodontology in each batch are awarded with ISP merit certificate.

Effect of Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) on plaque induced gingivitis – a microbiological study
The combined effect of bioactive glass and PRF in treating human periodontal intrabony defects – A clinicoradiographic study & effect of acupressure as an adjunct to oral prophylaxis in the treatment of gingivitis – randomized case control study were conducted successfully. Ongoing researches on sticky bone and CGF & awareness of the relationship between systemic diseases and periodontal diseases – a questionnaire based study are being conducted.
