The World No Tobacco Day 2024 event was conducted by RVS Dental College and Hospital, Kannampalayam, Coimbatore, under the theme "Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference." The institution remains committed to promoting health and wellness, particularly in combating tobacco use among youth. From May 20 to June 5, 2024, a series of initiatives were undertaken to raise awareness, educate, and engage both the campus community and the broader public in the fight against tobacco industry interference. These activities included:
- Educational Workshops: Interactive sessions were conducted by clinical psychologist and Medical social worker from Naveen rehabilitation center, Sulur to educate students, faculty, and staff about the detrimental effects of tobacco use, especially targeting children and adolescents. These workshops highlighted the deceptive tactics employed by the tobacco industry to target young individuals.
- Awareness Campaigns: Various awareness campaigns were organized across campus and surrounding areas to disseminate information about the dangers of tobacco use and the importance of protecting children from industry manipulation. These campaigns include signature campaigns and also utilized posters, pamphlets, and social media platforms to reach a wider audience.
- Community Outreach Programs: Engaging with local communities, the institution organized a rally from Sulur police station to Sulur new bus stand and public lectures as part of the observance of World No Tobacco Day aimed at reaching parents, guardians, and community leaders. These programs focused on empowering adults with knowledge and resources to safeguard children from the influences of the tobacco industry.
- Youth Engagement Activities: Special programs like rangoli competitions, face painting, debates, soap carving, poem writing, and pencil sketching were designed to actively involve youth in anti-tobacco advocacy. Youth-led initiatives, competitions, and creative campaigns were launched to empower young individuals to become ambassadors for tobacco-free communities.
- Screening Camps: The institution set up screening camps to identify and support individuals, especially youth, affected by tobacco use. These camps provided free oral health checkups and counselling services at RVS nursing college.
- School Camps: Camp was conducted at RVS Matriculation and Higher secondary school to directly engage with students, providing them with education and resources to resist tobacco use. This camp included interactive sessions, educational materials, and activities designed to reinforce anti-tobacco messages among school-aged children.
