TOBACCO CESSATION CENTER
Tobacco usage has been shown to have strong negative association with smoking prevalence and educational level, affluence, mental health of people worldwide. In order to promote health free of diseases, in patients with tobacco addiction and in compliance with DCI directive for the establishment of Tobacco Cessation Centres in dental institutes, Tobacco cessation center was inaugurated in RVS Dental College and Hospital on 26.06.2019 by our Chairman Dr.Thiru.K.V.Kupusamy under the able guidance of Principal, Dr.Mohan Gundappa and Vice-principal Dr.Ranjana Mohan and Executive director Mr.P.S.Srivathsan.
The Tobacco cessation centre would be functioning in collaboration with Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology on ground floor of RVS Dental College and hospital.
The Center consists of a furnished reception room with walls displaying colourful charts, models depicting deleterious effects of tobacco such as oral cancer, lung disease and other ill effects of tobacco on different vital organs.
The reception leading to consultation room is equipped with a portable dental chair and other diagnostic instruments. Carbon monoxide monitor has been installed to measure the CO levels of patients who are the victims of tobacco addiction.
Two oral physicians have been posted at this centre, who will record the detailed case history of the patient and Dependency assessed using Fagerstorm scale. Details on examination procedures and therapy for deaddiction are explained and consent will be signed. Patient will be thoroughly examined for any pre-cancerous lesions.
Then, patient will be tested for carbon monoxide levels by blowing in the Carbon Monoxide meter. After diagnosing the precancerous lesion, patients will be given information on appearance of oral lesions by using Intra-oral camera.
A qualified counsellor with a Masters degree in Science & Social Work has been appointed. He would be responsible for counselling the patient on behavioural therapy and educate on positive thinking and healthy lifestyle options.
Nicotine replacement therapy is available at the centre in the form of tablets. After starting the therapy subsequent visit appointments will be scheduled in regular intervals in compliance with the operational guidelines stated as an integrated approach by government of India.
