INTRODUCTION:

A free dental camp was successfully organized on Sunday, 10th November 2024, by the RVS College of Engineering and Technology in collaboration with RVS Dental College & Hospital, Coimbatore. This camp was conducted as a part of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), an initiative aimed at uplifting rural communities by providing essential healthcare services. The event took place at Annanagar and Old Charkarpathi villages, under the Vettaikaranpudur Panchayat in Pollachi Taluk, Tamil Nadu.

ORGANIZERS AND PURPOSE:

The event was hosted by the Community Service Cell of RVS College of Engineering and Technology, emphasizing the motto "Be ready – Serve others." It aimed to address dental healthcare issues in rural areas, promote oral hygiene awareness, and provide basic dental treatment to the underserved population. The initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to social responsibility and rural development through healthcare services.

FACILITIES AND SERVICES PROVIDED:

The camp was equipped with a fully operational *mobile dental van*, enabling dental check-ups and treatments on-site. The team from RVS Dental College & Hospital included experienced dentists, healthcare professionals, and support staff, ensuring quality care. Services offered included:

  1. Dental check-ups: Initial consultation and oral health assessment.
  2. Preventive care: Advice on oral hygiene and prevention of dental issues.
  3. Basic treatments: On-the-spot minor treatments like cavity fillings, scaling, and fluoride application.
  4. Awareness programs: Guidance on the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and proper dietary habits.

IMPACT AND PARTICIPATION:

The camp witnessed active participation from the local community, with a significant number of individuals benefitting from the free services provided. The accessibility of the mobile dental van was particularly appreciated by the elderly and children, who often face challenges in travelling to urban healthcare facilities. Volunteers and staff from the college played a crucial role in ensuring smooth coordination and outreach to the target population.

CONCLUSION:

The dental camp under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan was a commendable effort to extend healthcare to rural areas. It not only addressed immediate dental health issues but also raised awareness about the importance of oral hygiene, thus contributing to the long-term well-being of the community. Such initiatives highlight the role of academic institutions in fostering social responsibility and bridging the gap in rural healthcare services.
