National Periodontist Day commemorates the registration of the Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP) as a non‑profit organization in 1975 — a defining milestone that strengthened periodontal education, research, and clinical excellence in India. Since then, ISP has tirelessly advanced scientific knowledge, professional ethics, and public awareness about the vital connection between periodontal and systemic health.
The 2026 celebration at RVS Dental College and Hospital was marked by enthusiasm and academic pride under the guidance of Chairman Dr. Kuppusamy Ayya. The program began with a prayer song by Intern Mathura and Dr. Jayasakthi, followed by the traditional lamp‑lighting ceremony. Dr. Deepshika Saravanan, Professor and Head of Periodontology, delivered the welcome address, highlighting the role of periodontists in oral and systemic health. The presidential address by Dr. Vijay V.K., Principal cum Director, emphasized the growing importance of periodontal therapy in comprehensive dental care.
Dignitaries including Mr. Balachandar, Trustee of RVS Institutions, and Dr. Vijay V.K. were felicitated. The keynote lecture by Dr. Vishakha Grover (Treasurer, ISPI) explored systemic links of gum health, while Dr. Rajasekar (Vice Principal, Government Dental College, Cuddalore) shared insights on challenges and advances in periodontal therapy.
A highlight of the forenoon session was the prize distribution ceremony recognizing academic and research excellence:

- Dr. Vaishnavi & Dr. Abarna Shree – First Prize, Poster Presentation at PFA Conference 2025
- Dr. Harita – AAA Award
- Dr. Kavippriyan – ISPI Grant Award and Paper Presentation Prize
- Dr. Reemitha – Second highest mark in University Examination 2025
- Dr. Gowri – Second Prize, Paper Presentation at PFA Conference
- Interns Dr. Poojitha & Dr. Harshita – ISP Merit Award
- Intern Dr. Sameena Yasmin – Innovation Award for vacuum‑based extraction model
Creative competitions such as rangoli, placard designing, and reels were also recognized. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Maria Subhash Aaron, followed by the National Anthem.
In the afternoon, a live demonstration and hands‑on training session led by Dr. Deepshika Saravanan provided practical exposure in periodontal flap surgery and PRF techniques using goat mandible models. Certificates were distributed to participants, reinforcing clinical confidence and skill development.
The celebration concluded with a student‑organized rally promoting periodontal health awareness in the community through pamphlet distribution. The event was a resounding success, inspiring continued excellence in academics, research, and patient care.
